Pre-Treatment
Avoid Using Certain Products: Refrain from using the following products 2 days prior to your treatment (or until pinkness subsides): Retin-A, retinoids, or similar vitamin A compounds; Harsh scrubs or exfoliating products; Bleaching creams (unless instructed otherwise by your provider)
Gentlemen: Shave the treatment area one day before your scheduled treatment (unless instructed otherwise by your provider).
No Creams, Lotions, Perfume, or Makeup: Do not apply any creams, lotions, perfume, or makeup to the treatment areas before the procedure.
Eat Before Treatment: To decrease the chances of lightheadedness during your treatment, ensure you have had a recent meal, including food and drink.
Special Event Consideration: Schedule your Kybella® appointment at least 2-4 weeks prior to any special event (such as a wedding or vacation) due to potential bruising and prolonged swelling.
Avoid Certain Medications: Refrain from anti-inflammatory/blood thinning medications (such as Aspirin, Vitamin E, and Ibuprofen) 10-14 days prior and 3-4 days post-treatment to minimize the risk of bruising and swelling.
Limit Alcohol Consumption: Do not consume alcoholic beverages 1 week prior to treatment (as alcohol may thin the blood and increase bruising risk).
Consider Arnica Tablets: Begin taking Arnica tablets 1 week prior to injections to prevent bruising.
Post-Treatment
Apply ice and compression: Ice for 20min on/20 min off for 48 hours then as needed.
Avoid Extreme Heat: For 24 hours after treatment, avoid extreme heat sources (such as Jacuzzis and hot showers).
Limit Alcohol and Sodium: Do not consume alcohol or sodium for 3 days post-treatment to prevent excess swelling.
Avoid Strenuous Exercise:Refrain from strenuous exercise for 48 hours after treatment.
Sleep Position: Sleep on your back with your head elevated to decrease swelling.
Skin care: You may shower and wash your face and treatment area with a gentle cleanser. Do not rub, massage, or manipulate the treated area. No facials, chemical peels, or laser treatments on the treated area for at least 2 weeks.
What to Expect
Swelling and Bruising: You will experience swelling and bruising for 3-5 days post-treatment, gradually decreasing over a few weeks. Swelling can last 4-6 weeks. Take Arnica supplements and eat pineapple (if not allergic)! Arnica Montana two times per day may help reduce the appearance of bruising. You can find this product over the counter at CVS, Whole Foods, Amazon. Pineapple has natural anti-inflammatory properties and may also help to minimize swelling.
Discomfort: You may experience some pain and sensitivity to the treated area. Take Tylenol as needed for soreness. This is NORMAL. Avoid NSAIDs such as Motrin, Ibuprofen and Aleve as these can make bruising and swelling worse. You may take Tylenol as needed for any discomfort experienced.
Multiple Treatments: Many patients require 2-3 treatments for desired results. Schedule a follow-up appointment 4-6 weeks after your first treatment.
Numbness: Numbness can last up to 12 weeks.
Results: Full results may not be noticeable until 12 weeks post-treatment.
